Gaia Gongo
"Gaia Giongo is a visual artist who works mainly with collage. The combination of black and withe images with colored ones explores human needs and feelings, the inner conflicts and the contradictions. To her, paper has a special value: she admires its visual and tactile lightness meanwhile it can express very deep and granitic meanings. It can be also reused and recycled through multiple processes. But, above all, paper comes from a living source: trees. It is a gift that crosses multiple human and non-human living subjects.
She took part in national and international educational programs. Including the European vocational training program "Leonardo da Vinci", through which she was trained in the creation of sculptures with reused materials, in Cork, Ireland. In 2017 she won the call of the Disegnograve Publisher and published her first book, "The Wizard of Ozio", a feminist reinterpretation of classic stories, illustrated with collage. Since 2021 she devoted herself intensely to artistic research, through in-depth study and constant personal experimentation, aimed in particular at exploring the aesthetic and semantic composition of collage. Her works have been selected in international exhibitions and publications: CHEAP Festival, Mobile Library Magazine; Oltre Collage Fanzine; exhibition "Spaces, Places", Broadway Gallery, (UK); Artwork Gallery and Magazine; Suboart Magazine; exhibition "This is Gender (Un)Equality", Global Health 50/50; exhibition "Satire, fakery and defamation", MERZ Gallery, Scotland (UK); exhibition "Self care", Sincresis Gallery, Empoli; "CioccolaTÒ" exhibition, Turin; the Legacy of Women Festival OFF 2023, Florence. She is also a PhD student at the University of Statale Milan - University of Palermo in Gender Studies and she has been involved in ethnographic research in the field of environmental justice. Her research paths informed her approach and art practice. " |
